Alberta Driver's License Class 5 in Calgary

class 5 licence for a road trip

A Class 5 licence allow you to operate any two-axle vehicle, a moped or a recreational vehicle. You can also pull a trailer (as long as it doesn’t have air brakes).

Class 5 GDL

There are a few restrictions to the Class 5 GDL Licence:

  • Driver must have Zero blood alcohol level at all times while driving
  • Each passenger must have a seat belt
  • GDL drivers are not eligible to upgrade to a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 Commercial Licence
  • GDL drivers are not allowed to act as supervisory drivers to Class 7 Learners
  • A Class 5 GDL driver will be suspended at 8 demerits (as opposed to 15 for a non-GDL driver)

In order to upgrade to a Class 5 GDL Licence from a Class 7 Learner’s Licence, you must take a Enhanced Class 5 Road Test. The cost of the Road Test is $174. You can book your road test online or in our office. Please note: Road Test fees are non-transferable and non-refundable.

The Enhanced Class 5 Road Test is a 45 minute driving exam that will assess your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. You are eligible to take a Basic Road Test if:

  • you have held your Class 7 Learner’s Licence for at least one continuous year. If at any time during your licensing period your licence is suspended, you must start your one year over again.
  • you are at least 16 years old
  • you have no maintenance enforcement restrictions
  • you have no unpaid fines
  • your licence is not suspended or restricted

Class 5 (Non-GDL)

A Class 5 (Non-GDL) driver is considered to have graduated from the GDL program and is therefore not subject to any of the above conditions or restrictions.

Effective April 1, 2023, a road test is no longer required to graduate from the GDL program. Albertans will start receiving letters in July letting them know if they have automatically exited the GDL program. If you believe you are eligible to exit the program, you may visit an Alberta Registry office to exit the GDL program at no charge.

You may be eligible to exit the GDL program if:

  • you have held a Class 5 GDL Licence for at least two years and have not been suspended within the past 12 month period
  • you have no demerits within the past 12 months
  • you have no maintenance enforcement restrictions
  • you have no unpaid fines
  • your licence is not suspended or restricted

Effective January 1, 2021, Road Tests are administered by Registry Agent personnel by Certified Driver Examiners who are licensed by Alberta Transportation. All complaints regarding the actual road test or results must be forwarded to Transportation. Please call 780-427-8230.
