Vehicle Plate Class Quick Reference

Class 1*

Sub-Class

Purpose

1-51 School bus

Permits licensing of school buses carrying students and/or teachers to and from school and/or school events.

1-52 Public service bus

Permits licensing of buses carrying 11 passengers or more including driver on a public service basis within Alberta.

1-52p Public service bus Prorated

Permits licensing of buses carrying 11 passengers or more including the driver on a prorated public service basis in Alberta and at least one other jurisdiction.

1-55 Taxi

Permits licensing of vehicles carrying 15 or less passengers (including the driver) for monetary purposes.

1-56 Truck rental

Permits licensing of trucks, vans, buses and other vehicles (excluding passenger vehicles) for rental purposes.

1-56c Car rental

Permits licensing of vehicles (excluding trucks) designed to carry less than 15 passengers, including the driver for rental purposes.

1-56p Rental vehicle Prorated

Permits licensing of trucks, vans, buses and other vehicles (excluding passenger vehicles), traveling in Alberta and at least one other jurisdiction for rental purposes.

1-60 Exempted goods for hire within Alberta

Permits licensing of pilot/trail vehicles and other vehicles that are operated province wide and transport exempted goods of someone other than the registered owner.

1-60p Exempted goods for hire Prorated

Permits licensing of pilot/trail vehicles and other vehicles that are operated within Alberta and at least one other jurisdiction and transport exempted goods of someone other than the registered owner.

1-61 General merchandise for hire within Alberta

Permits licensing of vehicles that are operated province wide and transport the general merchandise of someone other than the registered owner.

Permits licensing of vehicles that are operated within Alberta and at least one other jurisdiction and transport the general merchandise of someone other than the registered owner.

1-tlr Commercial trailers – transporting someone else’s goods Permits licensing of trailers that operate province wide and transport exempted goods of someone other than the registered owner.
1-tow Driveaway/towaway – not towed by registered owner A 1-tow plate is placed on a vehicle that is being towed for the purpose of saving on drivers and/or fuel. The registered owner of the towing vehicle cannot own the vehicle being towed.

Class 2*

2-58 Farm vehicles

Permits licensing of vehicles for clients who have been approved by Alberta Agriculture for their Alberta Farm Fuel Benefit Program.

2-59 Transporting own goods/private buses

Permits licensing of vehicles that operate within a restricted area and transport the registered owner’s own goods.

2-60 Exempted goods for hire

Permits licensing of vehicles that operate within a restricted area and transport the exempted goods of someone other than the registered owner.

2-61 General merchandise for hire

Permits licensing of vehicles that operate within a restricted area and transport the general merchandise of someone other than the registered owner.

Class 3*

3-56n or 3-56 Off-highway/motorcycle rental vehicle

Permits licensing of motorcycles or an off-highway vehicles (mini, dirt and trail) that are rented without a driver to the general public.

3-99 Government vehicle Permits licensing of all owned and/or operated government vehicles.
Sub-classes:

  • 3-99 – motor vehicles
  • 3-99nmc or 3-99mc – motorcycles
  • 3-99noh or 3-99ohv- off-highway vehicles
  • 3-99sb – school bus
  • 3-99tlr – trailers with weight (no weight are 4-tlr)
3-pass Private passenger vehicle Permits licensing of cars, light trucks, vans and motor homes exclusively used for the personal transportation on a private, non-commercial basis.
3-nmc or 3-mc Motorcycle, scooter, moped, noped Permits licensing of two or three wheeled vehicles that have been classified as a motorcycle and designed to be operated on streets and highways.
3-noh or 3-ohv Off-highway vehicle Permits licensing of non-street legal motor bikes/vehicles designed for cross-country travel on land, water, snow, ice, marsh or swampland or other natural terrain.
3-ord Permits licensing of vehicles to transport the registered owner’s own goods on a commercial basis within Alberta.
3-ordp Permits licensing of vehicles that operate within Alberta and at least one other jurisdiction and transport the registered owner’s own goods on a commercial basis.
3-tlr Permits licensing of trailers that transport the registered owners own goods on a commercial basis.
3-tow A 3-tow plate is placed on a vehicle that is being towed for the purpose of saving on drivers and/or fuel. The registered owner of the towing vehicle must own the vehicle(s) being towed.
3-dsbl Permits licensing of vehicles for any individual that meets the established eligibility requirements for the disabled program.
3-ltgov Permits licensing of vehicles for the Lieutenant Governor.

Class 4*

4-tlr Trailers

Permits licensing of trailers primarily used for non-commercial (recreational) purposes.

Special Class*

Antique

Permits licensing of vehicles at least 25 years old and only operated as a collector’s item in exhibitions, club activities, parades and transportation to and from these activities.

Dealer

Permits licensing of licence plates to wholesale, servicing, retail, motorcycle, trailer and off-highway dealers.

Sub-classes:

  • dlr00 – Wholesale Dealer

    A business that coordinates the buying and selling of motor vehicles, on a wholesale basis, between other retail/wholesale automotive dealers

  • dlr00 – Servicing Dealer

    A business that services vehicles (e.g., auto painting, auto body/upholstery repair, glass replacement, etc.)

  • dlr91 – Retail Automotive Dealer

    A business that sells vehicles to the general public

  • dlr93n or dlr93 – Motorcycle Dealer

    A business that sells motorcycles

  • dlr94 – Trailer Dealer

    A business that sells trailers

  • dlr95n or dlr95 – Off-highway Dealer

    A business that sells off-highway vehicles

Disabled Placards

Permits issuance of permanent and temporarily disabled placards to any individual and not-for-profit organization that meets the established eligibility requirements for the disabled program.

Sub-classes:

  • dsblcard – parking placard for a permanently disabled client
  • dsbltemp – parking placard for a temporarily disabled client
3-cc Consular corps Permits licensing of vehicles owned and operated by consul, vice consul, honorary consul, career consul and consulate.
